1701  War of the Spanish Succession

A European alliance, including Britain, Austria and the United Provinces, to prevent the French monarchy inheriting the Spanish throne. Key battles were those of Blenheim, Ramillies and Oudenarde. The war concluded with the Treaty of Utrecht.

1710  Fifty New Churches Act

This Act of 1710 was intended to provide 50 new churches for the expanding population of London. 12 churches were eventually built under the act, including all of Hawksmoor's London churches.
