Questions > : 'What did the "Metal Roller" occupation entail?'

Question

Aug 04 2010, 03:16:01 What did the "Metal Roller" occupation entail?

I'm trying to learn the meaning and significance of particular occupational titles. My subject is a man who was 24 and a "copper roller" in the 1851 census, and a "metal roller" in 1861, 1871 and 1881, all in the Black Country. What did such a person do in the industrial process? How muck skill, prestige, remuneration, etc, could we ascribe to such a person? Would a roller supervise or even hire unskilled helpers/labourers?
