Question

Jun 25 2012, 19:18:13 18th Century Secretary of the Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs

I am looking for biographical info, such as dates and places of birth and death, and parents' names, for Edward Stanley, Esq. This Edward Stanley was NOT the Earl of Derby, but was a civil servant and reputedly a "cousin" of the 11th Earl. During the late 18th century, he held an office that was variously called "Secretary of the Customs"; "Commissioner of the Customs"; "Secretary to the Commissioners of the Customs"; and "Secretary to the Commissioners of His Majesty's Customs". I find reference to his holding the office from about 1760-1780. His eldest daughter, Sarah, married James Whatman, the paper maker. Can anyone direct me to resources that would definitely ID this Edward Stanley for me? There are so many and no bio I have found so far fits this Edward Stanley in terms of correct dates and family names. Thank you for trying to help out with this inquiry!Alex.
