15 Kal. June.
S. Maria Maggiore,
|To the archdeacon of Kildare (Daren.), and Robert Sotton, canon of Ferns. Mandate, as below. The recent petition of Richard Stakboll,’ priest, of the diocese of Ossory, contained that after collation and provision had been made to him by papal authority of the archdeaconry of Ossory, on its voidance at the apostolic see by the death there of Peter Cantuel, and after in virtue thereof he had obtained possession, John [H]edian, (fn. 1) clerk, claimed it and brought (fn. 2) him before David, bishop of Ossory; that Richard, without appearing before the said bishop, brought (fn. 2) the said bishop and John before John, archbishop of Tuam [sic], the metropolitan; that after the archbishop had proceeded, but short of a conclusion, Richard and John agreed upon as arbitrators the said bishop David, Thomas, abbot of St. Mary's Jerpoint (de Gereponte), O. Cist., in the diocese of Ossory, and Thomas Michaelis, canon of Ossory, who remitted Richard and John to the Roman court, on the understanding that the archdeaconry should belong to whichever of them should first obtain provision from the pope. The said petition adding that it is alleged that neither of them has any right, the pope hereby orders the above archdeacon and canon (inasmuch as Richard cannot safely meet John in the city and diocese of Ossory), if they find that neither has such right, to collate and assign the archdeaconry, a non-major dignity, value 40 marks sterling, to Richard.
