This volume has been edited and passed through the press on behalf of the Historical Manuscript Commissioners by Mr. M. S. Giuseppi, who has also written the Introduction.

The abstracts and transcripts of the letters and papers contained in it were made by various hands, and in cases of uncertainty during the printing, reference to the originals has been made by the help of Mr. J. V. Lyle. Librarian at Hatfield House.
