PRAYERS.
The Lord Chief Justice of the Common Pleas sat
Speaker.
State of the Nation.
The House (pursuant to the Order Yesterday) took
into Consideration the present State of the Nation.
And it being moved, "That the House be put into a
Committee:"
The House was adjourned during Pleasure, and put
into a Committee, to consider of the present State of
the Nation.
After some Time spent therein, the House was resumed.
And the Earl of Bridgewater reported, "An Association, drawn by the Committee of the whole House."
Which, being read, was agreed to, as followeth:
Association for the Safety of the King's Person and Defence of His Government:
"Whereas there has been a horrid and detestable
Conspiracy, formed and carried on by Papists and
other wicked and traiterous Persons, for assassinating
His Majesty's Royal Person, in order to encourage
an Invasion from France, to subvert our Religion,
Laws, and Liberties: We, whose Names are hereunto
subscribed, do heartily, sincerely, and solemnly profess, testify, and declare, That His present Majesty
King William hath Right by Law to the Crown of
these Realms; and that neither the late King James,
nor the pretended Prince of Wales, nor any other
Person, hath any Right whatsoever to the same: And
we do mutually promise and engage to stand by and
assist each other, to the utmost of our Power, in the
Support and Defence of His Majesty's most Sacred
Person and Government, against the late King James,
and the pretended Prince of Wales, and all their Adherents: And in case His Majesty come to any violent
or untimely Death (which God forbid), we do hereby
further, freely, and unanimously oblige ourselves,
to unite, associate, and stand by each other, in revenging the same upon His Enemies and their Adherents, and in supporting and defending the Succession of the Crown, according to an Act made in the
First Year of the Reign of King William and Queen
Mary, intituled, "An Act declaring the Rights and
Liberties of the Subject, and settling the Succession
of the Crown."
To be engrossed, and signed by the Lords.
It is ORDERED, by the Lords Spiritual and Temporal in Parliament assembled, That the Association, agreed
to by the House this Day, shall be engrossed, and lie
on the Table, for such Lords of this House to sign as shall
think fit so to do; and that To-morrow, at Twelve of the
Clock, the House shall be called over; at which Time
the Lords present shall sign, as named, if they please;
and all the Lords summoned to attend.
