The only mention of labour-services as late as this
occurs in Wright Wilson, 'Notes on Bordesley Manour',
T.B.A.S. xvii. 51 sqq. where 'Task Rolls' of various
manors are said to contain mentions of labour-services.
This seems to be a misinterpretation: the 'task rolls' are
recte 'tax rolls' and the examples of services quoted as
obtaining, e.g. in Bordesley c. 1514-36 appear to be
descriptions of areas of land and not amounts of services,
e.g. 'three days' math, . . . a threepenny math, a day's
work of land in the high field'. Such terms were used
elsewhere long after labour-services had been commuted.
The original rolls cannot now be traced. |

Staffs. Rec. Off. Q/RDc 8 (Handsworth Incl. Award).
For earlier references to open fields &c. in Handsworth,
see Gill, Mid. Hist. 186, 191 (rental); 9th Rep. Com. Char.
H.C. 258, p. 540 (1823), ix; B.R.L. 331914, nos. 138, 139,
268, 436. Professor Gill (Mid. Hist. 166) considers Parish
field (1538) and Church field (1793) to have been open
fields, but there is apparently no evidence beyond their
names. He also mentions Heath field and Middle field
but these seem to have been in Witton (but cf. Hackwood,
Handsworth Old and New, 24). Glomsmoor in Handsworth extended into Aston. |
