Maintenance of the Ministry.

Maintenance of the Ministry.
Fast.
The Lord President reported, That the Committees
of both Houses did present the Petition for the Fast
unto the King upon Saturday last; and that His Majesty presently answered, "That our Desire was
granted; but He would advise of the Time of the
Fast until this Monday Morning." And now His Majesty had returned His Answer, which was presently
read, in bæc verba: videlicet,
His Majesty's Answer to the Petition of both Houses for it.
"His Majesty is well pleased with the Petition presented, and is well content to have a Fast; and as for
the Time of keeping it, He appoints that to be done
on Saturday come Sevennight (the Fifth of April)
here in London, Westm. and in both Houses; before
which Time it may be hoped that we shall have
Cause to pray to God for the good Success of what
we shall by that Time resolve of, as also to beg His
Mercies towards others of our Religion that now are
in Danger, Calamities, and both these in one. And
for that Notice cannot so timely be given for keeping the Fast throughout the Kingdom, the King appoints the general Day of Fast for all other Parts of the
Kingdom to be on the One and Twentieth of April
next."
Message to the H. C. for Conference to communicate it to them.
This Answer being Twice read; the Lords sent a
Message to the Commons, by Mr. Attorney General
and Mr. Serjeant Damport:
That the former Committees of both Houses, concerning the said Petition for the Fast, may meet presently, in the Painted Chamber.
And so they did; and the Copy of the King's Answer was there delivered unto the said Committee of
the House of Commons.
Bishops to preach at the Fast.
The House appointed the Bishops of Sarum and
Exceter to preach at this Fast in the Abbey Church,
before the Lords; and that their Attendance shall be
spared here in the mean Time.
The House also Ordered, A public Communion
for all the Lords, in the said Abbey Church on the Saturday next, after the said Fast.
And, That all Constables shall have Warning to
search all Taverns and Ale-houses, and to apprehend
such as they shall find tippling there during the Time of
the said Fast, throughout London, Westm. and Southwarke.
Contribution to the Poor.
And the House also Ordered, That every Lord of
the Earls Bench shall pay Twenty Shillings unto the
Poor, and every Bishop and Baron Ten Shillings; and
those Lords who are absent by Proxy shall pay after the
same Rate also; and those Lords who have their Proxies
shall now pay the same for them. And the Clerk of
the Crown is appointed to receive this Money.
And the Earl of Clare, the Lord Bishop of Norwich,
and the Lord Spencer, to distribute the same.
The House also Ordered, That the Earl of Clare
and the Lord Spencer shall take Notice which of the
Lords are present, and which of them are absent, at
this Fast.
And also the House further Ordered, That the
Dean of Westm. shall preach himself at this Communion,
or take Order for a Preacher then.
Idolatry to be abolished, by putting in Execution the Laws against Priests, Jesuits, and Recusants.
The Lords were moved, That, now a Fast is appointed, our Sin might first be removed, which keeps
God's Mercies from us, and calls down his Judgements; videlicet, that great Sin of Idolatry, which is
now too much suffered in this Kingdom.
And that this House would therefore be Petitioners
unto His Majesty, that all the Laws against Seminary
Priests, Jesuits, and Recusants, might be put in full
Execution, without any Composition or Connivancy;
and also that those Religious Orders made by His Majesty, for Restraint of His own Subjects from the
Queen's Chapel and Denmarke House, to hear Mass,
may be strictly observed; and that this Petition might
now first begin in this House, wherein (no Doubt) the
Commons will join.
This Motion was generally well approved of; and a
Committee appointed to draw up the said Petition.
