Earl of Danby, Lord Bishop of Winchester, |
Excused. |
The Lord Keeper delivered this Message from the
King: videlicet,
"My Lords,
Message from the King, concerning the Proceedings of the House upon His Message Yesterday.
"His Majesty takes Knowledge (to your great Advantage) of the Proceeding of this House upon hearing His Majesty's Message Yesterday. He accounts it
a fair Respect, that you would neither agree of any
Committee, nor send any Message to His Majesty,
though it were in your Hearts; but yielded yourselves
to His Majesty's Message, and deferred your own
Resolutions until you met again at the Time appointed
by His Majesty.
"Yet His Majesty takes it in extreme good Part to
hear what was in your Heart, and especially that ye
were so sensible of the Inconveniences that might ensue upon Breach of this Parliament; which if it had
happened, or shall hereafter happen, His Majesty
assures Himself that He shall stand clear before God
and Man of the Occasion. But His Majesty faith,
you had just Reason to be sensible of the Danger,
considering how the Estate of Christendom standeth,
in respect of the Multitude and Strength of our
Enemies, and Weakness of our Party. All which
His Majesty knows very exactly, and in respect thereof called this Parliament. The Particulars His Majesty holds needless to recite, especially to your Lordships, since they are apparent to all Men; neither will
it be needful to iterate them to His Majesty, whose
Cares are most intentive upon them, and the best
Remedies that can be thought of therein, if His Subjects do their Parts. Therefore His Majesty gives
your Lordships hearty Thanks; and bid me tell you,
that Nothing hath been more acceptable to Him all
the Time of this Parliament than this dutiful and discreet Proceeding of your Lordships, which He professeth hath been a chief Motive to His Majesty to
suspend those Intentions, which were in Him, not far
from a Resolution."
