Footnotes

1 Shelford's d. is reported in the Michaelmas accounts of the dean and chapter of Wells which are apparently inaccurate on occasions. This is explained by the 'ancient custom' that the income of prebends vacant by death was payable to the escheator, a cathedral official, for the first year after the occurrence of the vacancy (Cal. MSS. D. & C. Wells 11 p. x).
