Hambleton el. after 7 May 1296, when Newark, previous dn., el. abp. (Reg. Romeyn 11 213). Litigation because Gaetani had been prov. 8 Sept. 1295 to next dignity to become vac. in York and claimed deanery (ibid. p. 214). Letter from abp. to pope in support of claims of Hambleton, 12 Dec. 1298 and expressing doubts about Gaetani's rights to hold deanery (ibid.). Abp. and Hambleton cited by pope 13 Feb. 1299 (CPL. 1 580). Letter from abp. to pope, 20 May that he had not conf. el. of Hambleton, although el. by chapt. but had referred dispute to the curia for judgt. (Reg. Romeyn 11 302).
