PREBEND

One hide of land wrested by bp. Remigius from church of St. Paul, Bedford, by 1086 (D.B. I 209a); presum. part of land within and without the borough conf. to cans. of Lincoln by pope 28 Apr. 1139 (R.A.L. I no. 249), and to be identified with one carucate in Bedford held by 2 prebs. of Bedford Major and Minor 'from time out of mind' in 1331 (Placita de Quo Warranto (Rec. Commission, 1818) p. 51); this land was Ford End, north of the River Ouse in Bedford (see V.C.H. Beds. III 21-2), certainly preb. by 1230s or 1240s (Bedford R.O., D.D. W. 3/1, also nos. 4-7, 12-13, 17 etc.). (fn. 2)

Chapel of St. Mary, Herne, Bedford, res. by Nicholas archdcn. of Bedford to Newnham priory, before 1181 (Cart. Newnham no. 196), but prob. preb. by 1230s or 1240s (Bedford R.O., D.D. W. 3/1), and certainly by later 13th cent. (R.A.L. III no. 643). (fn. 3) See also Bedford R.O., D.D. TW. 149-62.

Portion of tithes of Kilsby (Northants), conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (R.A.L. I no. 252 p. 199) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 206); said to have been bp.'s manor from T.R.E. (ibid. no. 43 = Regesta II no. 732), but Coventry abbey in 1086 (D.B. I 222c). See also R.A.L. III 2-3.

Moiety of church of Kirkby Underwood (Lincs.), first mentioned as this preb. 6 Jan. 1251 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 126; cf. Val. Norwich p. 246); called preb. of Kirkby 20 Nov. 1298 (Reg. Sutton VI 122-3). See also R.A.L. III 2-3.

Occ. as this preb. 1230s or 1240s (Bedford R.O., D.D. W. 3/1). (fn. 1) Perhaps to be identified with either M. Walter of Warminster (unident. preb., p. 147) or M. Walter de Sancto Edmundo (treas., list 5).

Benedict de Burgo (fn. 2)

Still clk. 25 March 1247 (Rot. Grosseteste p. 428). First occ. as can. July 1247 (ibid. p. 104). Occ. as this preb. 6 Jan. 1251 (ibid. p. 126). Presum. to be identified with Benedict, bp.'s clk., who became Aug. can. at Dunstable 9 May 1252 (Ann. Dunstable p. 185). This preb. called 'prebenda Benedicti in Bedfordia', 1254 (Val. Norwich p. 279).

M. Stephen de Tawell (fn. 3)

First occ. as can. 19 June 1286 (Reg. Sutton I 85). Transf. from this preb. to preb. Buckden, coll. 10 Jan. 1291 (Reg. I fo. 354r-v; list 24).

Coll. by bp. 10 Jan. 1291 (Reg. I fo. 354v). Transf. from this preb. to preb. Lafford, coll. 18 Nov. 1293 (ibid. fo. 356v; list 40). Prob. to be identified with M. William de Stoketon who had been coll. by bp. to church of Mere (Lincs.), 10 Oct. 1280 (Reg. Sutton I 7).

John de Schalby (fn. 5)

Registrar of bp. Oliver of Sutton (1280-99) for 18 years, and author of lives of bps. of Lincoln (Schalby pp. 193-216, esp. p. 210). Coll. by bp. 11 Oct. 1299 (Reg. I fo. 362v). Transf. from this preb. to preb. Welton Beckhall, coll 22 March 1302 (Reg. II fo. 276v).

2 This land was thought by G. H. Fowler, The Story of the Prebends of Bedford (privately pd., Bedford, 1934), to be the hide of the cans. of St. Paul's in Ford 'que fuit de prebenda Philippi et Gilberti' which passed to Newnham priory c. 1165 (Cart. Newnham nos. 1, 5); Fowler thought that Philip and Gilbert were cans. both of St. Paul's, Bedford, and of Lincoln cathedral. For a different opinion on the land, also given by Fowler (1931), see R.A.L. I 10. There is insufficient evidence to suggest a likely answer.
3 Not to be confused with parish church of St. Mary, Bedford, conf. to bp. as his predecessors held it, 1072 (R.A.L. I no. 2, cf. no. 3), and conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (ibid. no. 252 p. 198) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 207); disputed between dean and chapter and priory of Dunstable (see Cart. Dunstable nos. 142, 144, 336, 875; Ann. Dunstable p. 52; C.R.R. I 298, II 16; B.H.R.S. i (1913) 178-9), settled in favour of Lincoln, with pension payable to Dunstable 1217 (R.A.L. III no. 642; cf. Rot. Welles I 109, III 17, 30; Rot. Grosseteste pp. 308, 309-10; Rot. Gravesend p. 196).
