PREBEND
One hide of land wrested by bp. Remigius from church of St. Paul, Bedford, by
1086 (D.B. I 209a); presum. part of land within and without the borough conf. to
cans. of Lincoln by pope 28 Apr. 1139 (R.A.L. I no. 249), and to be identified with
one carucate in Bedford held by 2 prebs. of Bedford Major and Minor 'from time
out of mind' in 1331 (Placita de Quo Warranto (Rec. Commission, 1818) p. 51);
this land was Ford End, north of the River Ouse in Bedford (see V.C.H. Beds. III
21-2), certainly preb. by 1230s or 1240s (Bedford R.O., D.D. W. 3/1, also nos. 4-7,
12-13, 17 etc.). (fn. 2)
Chapel of St. Mary, Herne, Bedford, res. by Nicholas archdcn. of Bedford to
Newnham priory, before 1181 (Cart. Newnham no. 196), but prob. preb. by 1230s
or 1240s (Bedford R.O., D.D. W. 3/1), and certainly by later 13th cent. (R.A.L. III

Portion of tithes of Kilsby (Northants), conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (R.A.L.
I no. 252 p. 199) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 206); said to have been bp.'s manor
from T.R.E. (ibid. no. 43 = Regesta II no. 732), but Coventry abbey in 1086 (D.B. I
