Church of South Carlton and church of Thurlby by Lincoln (both Lincs.) gr. 'in prebendam' by William the constable, by ? c. 1133 (R.A.L. II nos. 552-3, see app. 3); conf. as preb. by pope 6 Feb. 1146 (R.A.L. I no. 252 p. 199) and 5 June 1163 (ibid. no. 255 p. 205). Advowson of South Carlton evidently belonged to Paynel family, lords of the manor (Rot. Gravesend p. 89; cf. E.Y.C. VI 266 n., 269).

First preb., son of William the bp.'s constable who founded the preb. (R.A.L. II no. 553, cf. no. 552). First occ. ? c. 1133 (ibid. no. 553, see app. 3). Last certain occ. 30 May 1163 (R.A.L. IX no. 2474), c. 1163 (ibid. IV no. 1247, V no. 1514, see app. 22), and ? c. 1163 (R.A.L. IX no. 2608, see app. 23). Sometimes called Robert the constable (e.g. R.A.L. IV no. 1247, V no. 1514, IX no. 2608).

Presum. the unnamed Roman who occ. as this preb. in years Sept. 1304 - Sept.
