LIST 25 PREBENDARIES OF CHARDSTOCK

PREBEND

Manor of Chardstock (now Devon, formerly Dorset) belonged to bp. 1066 and 1086 (DB I 77b, entered under Dorset), held by two knights, Walter and William. Walter possibly to be identified as Walter Tirel, whose daughter married a member of the Percy family (cf. Sar. Chs. p. 18). Disputes and settlements between members of the Percy family over bp.'s land of Chardstock mid 1150s (Sar. Chs. pp. 18-20, 25), and 1196 (ibid. p. 57; cf. Tirel claim of 1201, ibid. pp. 66-7, 68, and Vaux quitclaim of 1220s, ibid. p. 174).

Preb. prob. added to Psalter list after c. 1150, certainly in existence before 1220 (Sar. Chs. p. 80). Preb. consisted of church of Chardstock, given by Gerbert de Percy, conf. by Henry II 1158 (RSO I 205), and by 1215 x 20 chapel of Wambrook (Somt., ancient par. Chardstock) also part of preb. (Sar. Chs. p. 80, not Wanborough as given in Sar. Chs. index).

M. Abraham of Winchester

Prob. to be identified with Abraham who occ. as chapl. 2 June 1200 (Sar. Chs. p. 60; cf. ibid. p. 76) and as chapl. and can. 7 Jan. 1213/14 (Nova Const.), and with 'Master Abzolom' who occ. as can. 1213 x Jan. 1215 (Cart. Loders no. 30). Became treas. 30 March 1214, last occ. 17 Jan. 1222 (list 5). Occ. this preb. 1215 x 20 (Sar. Chs. p. 80).

Gilbert de Sandford (fn. 1)

Occ. as can. three times: as G. de Sandford, this preb., Oct. 1226 x Feb. 1227 (app. 1); as Gilbert de Salford 9 Sept. 1228 (RSO II 109); as Gilbert de Sanford, excused, 19 Oct. 1233 (Sar. Chs. p. 230).

Henry de Esse

First occ. as can. 1 Sept. 1281 (IV/E.5/Archdeacon of Dorset/3). Occ. this preb. May-June 1284 (app. 2). Occ. as can. 10 May 1288 (app. 3). Inducted to preb. Horton 17 Aug. 1289 (list 37). Prob. retained this preb. also, since writ of 2 March 1297 addressed to sheriffs of both Devon (this preb.) and Glos. (preb. Horton) (CCR 1296-1302 p. 95).

Next identified preb. is M. William de Chaddleshunt, (fn. 1) who was coll. to this preb. 30 Nov. 1309 (Reg. Gandavo II 718; see 2 Fasti III 39).
