LIST 27 PREBENDARIES OF PIONA PARVA
PREBEND
Pion or Pyon was one of the 4 manors given to the church of Hereford in preConquest times by Wulviva and Godiva; in 1086 3 of the bp.'s clks, held 4½ hides
of the manor. The preb. of Piona Parva is prob. a survival of one of these 3
holdings. The preb. is referred to as Pionia Stephani (assessed at 20s) in the
prebendal taxation list entered into bp. Swinfield's register in 1294 (Reg. Swinfield
p. 305), and the Stephen in question may be the Stephen who occ. holding Lyde,
near Pyon, c. 1160 × c. 1170 (Herefordshire Domesday p. 28), and may also be
identifiable with the Stephen who occ. as can. in the mid 12th cent. (list 36). In
the taxation of pope Nicholas IV of c. 1291 the preb. of Pyon was assessed at £1
(Taxatio p. 169a); Valor III 12 assessed the preb. at 36s 8d.
PREBENDARIES
?
Stephen
Possibly held the preb. of Pion in the third quarter of the 12th cent. (see comment
above and list 36).
M. Robert Folet
Previously preb. of Woolhope, i.e. Gorwell and Overbury (list 16); occ., prob.
as preb. of Piona Parva, Aug. 1230 × 7 Aug. 1234 (EEA VII no. 341). Robert
does not occ. after 1234 but his date of d. is uncertain; is prob. to be identified
with the can. Robert Foliot who was commem. 17 June (app. 1 fo. 23r), for it is
unlikely that Robert Folet would not have been commem. at Hereford, and the
names Folet and Foliot were confused by another late medieval scribe, the copyist
of the 15th-cent. cart. II.
M. William of Hay II
(fn. 79)
First occ. as can. of Hereford, preb. unspecified, 1271 × 1274 (Reg. Swinfield

and 30 Sept. 1273 (Capes, Charters pp. 138-9); d. by 31 May 1290 when his
preb. of Pion was gr. by bp. Swinfield to John de Shelvinge (Reg. Swinfield p.
528). He is evidently the William of Hay, can., commem. 31 May, who left 10m
12s payable from two houses in Castle Street for the church fabric and other
bequests for a perpetual vicarage at the altar of St Francis (app. 1 fo. 20v).
John de Shelvinge
Previously coll. to preb. of Hinton (list 18), but coll. void; coll. to preb. of Piona
Parva, vac. by the d. of M. William of Hay 31 May 1290 (Reg. Swinfield p. 528); occ.

to preb. of Hinton 4 Aug. 1299 (list 18).
M. Thomas of Cobham
(fn. 80)
Not can. when he occ. 16 Feb. 1297 (CPL I 569); coll. to preb. of Fiona Parva
5 Dec. 1299 (Reg. Swinfield p. 531); retained preb. of Fiona Parva until he became
bp. of Worcester, prov. 31 March, cons. 22 May, temps. 20 Nov. 1317; his successor
in the preb. was M. Roger of Northburgh (2 Fasti II 39). Also can. of Wells (1
