PREBENDARIES OF UFTON CANTORIS

Preb. valued 1535 at £2 13s 4d (Valor III 131).

Valor has Robert Sherwood at one Ufton and 'William -' at the other. The two prebs. of Ufton are very muddled in Le Neve-Hardy and Survey of Cath. The first occasion on which a preb. of Ufton is specified is in 1578 (see Ufton Decani, below), and this occ. provides the principal basis for deductions as to the identity of the early holders.

William Gilbert 1610.

Footnotes

1. Survey of Cath. gives Sherwood as instal. 2 March [sic] at Ufton Decani. For Ufton Cantoris, Survey of Cath., followed by Le Neve-Hardy, gives Thomas Beale or Bell as adm. 25 April 1561, and Le Neve-Hardy alone gives Nicholas Novall as coll. 4 July 1572. No evidence has been found for these.
1. N.B. William Beale instit. 2 Feb. 1561 to the other Ufton. They are definitely two different men.
