ARCHDEACONS OF DORSET

John Skip D.D. ?-1542.

Perhaps succ. Edward Fox when latter became bp. of Hereford in 1535 (cf. Valor II 73). Skip bp. of Hereford 1539, but had royal lic. 9 Nov. to hold this archdcnry in commendam with his bpc. until All Saints' day [1 Nov.] 1542 (L. & P. XIV no. 619 (25)). Archdcnry annexed to Bristol dioc. 4 June 1542 (Foedera, ed. T. Rymer (The Hague, 1735-45) VI iii 80). Res. by 11 Dec. 1542 (L. & P. XVII no. 1251 (19)).

Archdcnry transferred from Bristol to Salisbury dioc. by Order in Council 5 Oct. 1836 in accordance with Stat. 6 & 7 Will. IV c. 77 (Lond. Gaz. no. 19429).
