40. THE HOSPITAL OF BOUGHTON UNDER BLEAN
Richard II on I August, 1384, at the supplication of the earl of Arundel, pardoned the
trespasses committed by Thomas atte Herst of
' Bocton atte Blee' in having without licence
founded and built in honour of the Holy Trinity
a chapel 150 ft. long by 50 ft. broad, and a house
of the same dimensions for lepers and other infirm
persons thither resorting, in the king's highway
called ' Chyniot in Bocton under le Blee,' and in
his having ordained a certain number of lay
brethren and sisters to dwell in the said house to
pray for the king, his progenitors and heirs and
the whole realm; pardoned the forfeitures incurred; and granted to the said Thomas that he
by the name of master or warden of the said
chapel and house should with the said brethren
and sisters hold the same in perpetuity by the
king's gift, and the chapel should be the king's
free chapel, the king the founder and the chancellor the patron, visitor and protector. (fn. 1)
Nothing more is known of this hospital.
