EDITORIAL NOTE

THE greater part of this volume was already in print in the summer of 1939. When the national collections of records were removed from London on the outbreak of war it was impossible to complete the remaining sections. Work was resumed on these as soon as the Public Record Office and British Museum were functioning again, but delay from this cause and other post-war conditions has been inevitable.

Thanks are due to the Cambridge University Press for the loan of blocks and for permission to use material which had already appeared in The Cambridge Region (1938).
