Preface

The whole of the text of this volume, including the introduction, was prepared, on behalf of the Historical Manuscripts Commissioners, by Mr. J.H. WYLIE, M.A., D. Litt., who only lived, however, to pass the first 160 pages finally through the press. The remainder has been passed by his son, Mr. JAMES WYLIE, Barrister-at-Law, who has followed his father's manuscript exactly except for some minor verbal alterations.

The index has been compiled by Miss Ethel George.
