1720.1. Letters from Mr Burchett to the Secretaries of the Lords of the Treasury (1) touching two fields purchased by the Government and required by the Chatham Yard; (2) the destruction of woods in New England; [Minuted:—“30th June 1720. To the Lords of the Admty that if they think it necessary for the preservation of the woods in America that another officer be appointed, Mr Brydger may be nominated, wth such allowance of salary as they shall think proper to be charged upon the ordinary of the navy.”] (3.) On the same subject; (4) the difficulties of making contracts for flesh for the navy; (5) as to a convoy for two vessels laden with provisions for the garrison of Gibraltar; (6) the arrears of the artificers working in the Yard at Chatham. 29 pages.
2. Papers relating to the affairs of the Treasurer of the Chamber, viz., as to the necessities of persons in his Majesty's service who have been obliged to sell and pawn their goods. Accounts of what is owing and as to what will be required to clear the Messengers' bill. 23 pages.
3. Reports and memorials of the Comrs of Customs to the Lords of the Treasury, touching (1) a complaint of misbehaviour of Mr John Hilden, Collector of Customs at St Christophers; (2) vexatious suits against officers of Customs; (3) as to unrated goods; (4) as to a ship stranded near Bridgewater; (5) clauses to be offered to Parliament to prevent fraud; (6) seizure of uncustomed goods; (7) as to the amount of tare to be allowed on goods; (8) drawback on cider and perry; (9) on the dismissal of Mr Gravenor, late Collector of Customs at Ipswich; (10) frauds carried on in the Isle of Man by smugglers; (11) as to “sinking” two land surveyors as they die or are removed (London); (12) as to the prosecution of E. Carll, bookseller, for reflecting on the board. They are willing, upon his submission, to drop the prosecution. Minuted:—“Agreed to.” 12 sets of papers.
4. Reports and two or three other papers of the Commissioners for stating the debts due to the army: viz., on demands for disbursements for victualling the Garrison of Annapolis Royal; on allowance for subsistence of non-commissioned officers and privates at Alicant; on demands of the States General for bread and forage furnished by them; on demands of the officers of Lord Galway's regiment of foot, and Mrs Baccalan's demand for an allowance for her husband's service as paymaster to prisoners; on claims for clothing, &c.; on demand for mules furnished for the forces under the command of the Earl of Galway in 1708; on demands for the pay of divers officers; on demand of the regiment of horse under the command of Lord Londonderry; on demands of several regiments that served in Spain and Portugal; on demand of contractors for forage delivered to the Hanover Dragoons. 13 papers or sets of papers.
5. Reports of the Comrs of Excise to the Lords of the Treasury on (1) memorial for repayment of 2,500l. advanced by the Comrs of Excise in North Britain to Major-Genl Whetham; (2) on the memorial and account of drawbacks for hops exported to Ireland; (3) on the memorial concerning the prosecutions against Caleb Powell and William Vaston, tanners at Leominster. Also letter and account touching the produce of the duties on malt, mumm, cider, and perry, and another letter and papers as to the auditing of the accounts of the duties on hides by Sir Basill Dixwell. 28 pages.
6. Various papers relating to financial matters, such as estimates, propositions for paying the debts of the civil list, memoranda as to Exchequer Bills, lotteries, &c. 28 papers.
